What this tool covers

A practical walk-around—not a CDL test script.

This tool is designed for operational pre-trip and post-trip inspection review of a tractor and semi-trailer combination.

Federal framework

Before driving, 49 CFR 396.13 requires the driver to be satisfied that the motor vehicle is in safe operating condition and to review the prior driver vehicle inspection report when required. 49 CFR 392.7 identifies safety-critical equipment that must be in good working order before the vehicle is driven.

Post-trip / DVIR boundary

For property-carrying operations, 49 CFR 396.11 requires defects or deficiencies that could affect safe operation or result in mechanical breakdown to be reported. Federal rules generally do not require a property-carrying driver to prepare a no-defect DVIR when no defect or deficiency is discovered or reported. Company policy, contract requirements, state rules or specialized operations may be more restrictive.

Important

SafetyFlow inspection guidance is an operational aid. It does not replace company procedures, manufacturer instructions, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, out-of-service criteria, or qualified mechanical judgment.
